A Milestone In Human History

Without a doubt, the events of Sept. 11 2001 were a milestone in human history. In this article I will offer two perspectives. The first is my personal experience. The second will be an assessment of the event’s historical significance.

I am a musician living in New York City. I keep late hours. On the late morning of Sept.11, 2001, I woke up to a phone call from my mother in Milwaukee. She asked if I was OK. I said “Yeah, Mom. Why wouldn’t I be?” She told me, in a nutshell, what happened. I told her I’d call back.

Musical Warriorship For The Young Artist

The world has changed. While we stand at the beginning of a Second Golden Age of Islamic Civilization, there will be no return to the past. What is arising will be very different from what has happened in the past.

Or perhaps the Last Day is within sight. Allahu Alim.

One of the things that has crept into the consciousness of people is the unpredicted use of sound as an art form: not in the way we normally think of as music, but pure sound. Hip Hop DJs, Avant Garde artists, Free Jazz musicians, the electropsychic onomatopoeia of Jimi Hendrix, etc. are all sound art. I have done experiments with sound art, both electronic and acoustic, since I was in my teens. We acknowledge the potential of sound art as being legitimate and authentic art.

The Way Forward

An Islamic culture — and its inevitable musical and artistic manifestations — are in their infancy in the United States. It is necessary for American Muslim artists to develop an artistic identity that is entirely our own. Unless that is done, they will be either a cheap imitation of some “exotic” culture, or a cheap imitation of non-Muslim music.

A Terrible Truth

The recent Sunni vs. Shi'ite conflicts in Iraq and elsewhere are explained very simply by two main phenomenon. The first is the well known (to those who are informed and immune to doublethink) fact that all of those extremist groups are infiltrated by CIA and Mossad agents. These intelligence agencies would be stupid and irresponsible not to do so. Somebody drops a few bombs - or a lot of bombs, and the infiltrators go to work stirring up an already emotionally charged population. It is the first principle of despotism; divide and conquer. We saw it with the Black Panthers.

Jihad Al-Sitcom: Islam Goes Mainstream

The CBC in Canada has recently made a bold move in their programming and began airing a new sitcom called Little Mosque on the Prairie. Even before the first episode was aired, there was a flurry of controversy in the media. Articles were written in major publications. TV talk shows interviewed Muslims and self-appointed “experts” who think they have the knowledge and experience to tell us who we are. Message boards and comment posts saturate the internet. Everyone had an opinion (as do I!) Of course, this controversy has proven to be of incalculable value for publicity.

Why The World Needs Us

xcessive restriction is the result of an irrational fear of the human creative urge. Within each individual human soul is the need to express itself free from an artificial will imposed upon it from another. Of course, no authoritarian society can tolerate this. The ever increasing restrictions of an oligarchic elite have but one goal in mind; to amass power and wealth and then freeze history at a precise moment.

Bollywood: Not An Illness, But A Symptom

n an article recently published in India Times titled Brit-Pak Muslims bash Bollywood by Chidanand Rajghatta, young British Muslims hurl invective against the Bollywood music and film industry. Responses to this article suggest, among many other things, an identity crisis that the British  Pakistani youth may be enmeshed in. Owing to their choice of musical genre: Hip Hop, this is a perfectly admissible argument. However, there are deeper problems to be addressed here an excessive dwelling on surface appearance may obscure the underlying causes.
