We are six years removed from the horrific events that took place on Sept. 11. When reflecting on a traumatic experience we can get stuck on the past instead of using that memory to propel us into the present, which at one point was our future. There is an old adage to live life in the moment, which is relevant to me, as an American Muslim.

In the Muslim community, we find ourselves forced to face this diversity, whether we want to or not! And it is all too often that we don’t want to. Many look upon someone outside their community, nationality, race, culture, political ideals, etc. as being inferior.

In this issue, we would like to strike a balance between stories of adversity and achievement. Both hardship and ease inspire the Believers, as we have read in the Qur’an, and encourage us to press forward no matter the situation. With the remembrance of these things, we are pulled closer to a higher reality and a stronger moral position, even if it is something we have merely read and not yet experienced.

Factional differences have always been an obstacle for Muslims and began very early on, crippled our solidarity and left us with a severe handicap. It affected our choice of leadership and even led to violence, in some cases. If it wasn’t tribalism, nationalism or classism, we have undergone every other sort of ism one can imagine. And perhaps more embarrassing, the status once given to women in the Qur’an was reversed (in certain regions) by outrageous cultural norms.
