few years back, on a crisp winter’s evening, I had just finished up a shopping run at the local grocery store and was getting ready to check out. As I approached the checkout counter I sensed a mysterious gaze come from the direction of the clerk behind the register. It laid into me with a somewhat unsettling kind of penetration. Beginning to put my things on the conveyor belt, the clerk, without offering the customary “Hello, sir, how are you doing this evening?” just called out to me saying: “Man, you should shave that beard off! It doesn’t look good!”

OMETIMES THE HUMAN BEING REGRETS A SIN that he or she has perpetrated, not because of sincere shyness and regret in front of the Divine gaze, but more so because of what people would say if they found out. In other words, the person in question repents to Allah for fear of others, not out of fear and concern for one’s own relationship with Allah Himself. It is as if he or she is afraid that if they don’t repent, Allah may expose their faults to others, either in this life, or in the next (which would be far worse, of course). Nonetheless, their fear is limited to their own selfish concerns for “looking good”.
