Throughout our nation’s long history, powerful personalities have soughtto exploit the populace and their power by using rhetoric to manipulate the passions of the masses. Once the public machines manufactured hate and distrust of a particular group, the machinery of the state followed with policies to dominate and control. African Americans, at the beginning of our nation’s history, were deemed inferior and the constitution dubbed them three-fifths human. Native Americans were thought to be savages and their lands were forcibly taken by the state.

When reflecting on knowledgeable, determined Muslim visionaries at the forefront of the interfaith movement in America, Maha Elgenaidi undoubtedly comes to mind. As founder and President of Islamic Networks Group, an educational outreach organization with affiliates and partners in 20 states, Canada and the United Kingdom, Elgenaidi’s contribution toward promoting interfaith dialogue and forming an American Muslim identity are commendable. In an unprecedented move, Elgenaidi agreed to an interview, describing to Illume Magazine the personal journey that led her to found ING and sharing her initial struggle as a female activist in a Muslim male-dominated sphere. She stresses the importance of religious literacy of Muslims and increasing knowledge about Islam using personal face-to-face interaction to build bridges among Americans of all faiths, especially during this time of heightened political insecurity.

In September of 2005, a group of Muslims from various Bay Area masajid and Islamic centers came together to have a day of Unity called “Muslim Unity Day” at a local amusement park in Santa Clara, California. This was the first such event of its kind in Northern California, and perhaps on the West Coast, with approximately 4,000 Muslims from across California attending. This was a big surprise to the organizers as they were expecting at most 1,500 people to attend. Alhamdulillah with the support of the community they were able to hold a similar event last August (2006) and Insha’Allah, will have their third Muslim Unity Day event on August 11th of this year at Great America Park.

Picture a 300-LB, 6’4" tall man with a thick beard and brown skin, screaming and running full speed at you. Afraid? Well you should be, but not because of the fear of being attacked by a stereotypical suicide bomber from a lousy Hollywood movie; instead Ibrahim “Obby” Khan is the first Pakistani-Canadian Muslim to play professional football in North America. He was the first pick (second pick overall) of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2006 Ottawa Player Dispersal Draft and has been playing in the CFL (Canadian Football League) for 3 years as an Offensive Lineman.

Cleverly hidden beneath the cloak of Civil Liberties, is the reality that thousands of citizens face-such a thing no longer exists. Vengeful lawmakers and politicians have hijacked the right we once called Freedom of Speech, replacing it with an agenda other than the public’s best interest. In a post 9/11 world, scores of innocent people have come forward retelling experiences of detainment, interrogation, “secret” hearings, and downright harassment. The most horrid of all, of course, is the imprisonment of hundreds of multiracial people in the Navy’s Guantanamo base, most of which are reported to be completely innocent but still without legal representation five years later.

Mattson is the first female to head the organization, which is the largest, most inclusive Muslim group in North America, with a sizeable political and social reach.

“I CANNOT INTRODUCE SOMEONE THAT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED…” is how my dear brother in Islam, Sidi Ibrahim Osi-Efa, began his introduction for Habib Umar during the later’s recent visit to the United Kingdom in May 2006. Indeed, the man whose advice you are about to read is someone that has already been introduced. His voice is known in the heavens above. He is loved in the earth below. He is a leader, a guide, a father, a husband, and a teacher of the highest caliber. In all of his roles he aims for and has achieved lofty degrees of excellence. How shall such a one be introduced with mere words? Nonetheless, we must say something. We ask Allah to make it reach the hearts.

THE GLOBAL MUSLIM COMMUNITY IS COLLECTIVELY EXPERIENCING ISLAMIC RESURGENCE. Whether resisting the clutch of imperialism, battling poverty and illiteracy, or emerging from a nation formerly ran by slaveholders, the Ummah is undergoing a revival. On a brighter note, these tribulations do not weaken our spiritual state but rather serve to strengthen it.

ISLAM IN AMERICA has developed in interesting ways over the past few decades. From Sufi efforts to curb the influence of Salafi-ism, to the notable focus put on the difference between immigrant and American-born Muslims, the discourse within the community has increased in sophistication and diversity.
