All throughout the day of the horrific Virginia Tech massacre, everyone was wondering about the identity of the gunman. It took the authorities an unusually long time to identify him, and this sent speculations flying...and had Muslims worrying. I am almost certain the entire Muslim community was on edge as authorities worked to identify Cho Seung-Hui.

In late April, Americans will be riveted by the PBS documentary films, entitled, America at a Crossroads, that explore the dynamics of the post-9/11 world and how it has affected the national psyche as well as the political, economic, cultural and social realities. This series also straddles the security and interaction of America with other nations, especially pertaining to the Muslim world.

A couple of days ago, I visited a lecture at CSU East Bay to attend an Ethnic Media class taught by Dr. Agha Saeed. This particular lecture immersed the class into Chinese literature, and how at the deep structural level the world’s cultures have many parallels.

I became thoroughly intoxicated with the gushing poetry and philosophy strung neatly together by the professor, who in the same breath as quoting Confucius and Lao Tzu, sprinkled in Aristotle and Nietzsche.

In her book "The Second Sex," French writer Simone de Beauvoir documented the role and condition of women throughout the centuries and concluded that "one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Since the war in Afghanistan began, As a woman from the West, I have been struck by the images in the US media, of Afghan women covered head to toe in burkas. I wonder if they are hot, or uncomfortable. Those images are to me in direct contradiction with what the US media tends to show for instance, in their advertisements to women. Not only are women’s bodies shown with very little clothes in certain catalogues, but more significantly because of its lasting impact, the rigidity of choices presented to each gender.
