Sometimes it’s almost hard to believe that almost two years ago, my family and I lived through the biggest natural disaster in American history. We have since recovered our material possessions and moved to another state because Hurricane Katrina forced us out of New Orleans, La. On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina exposed our city and its long suffering with poverty, failing schools, political corruption and neglect. The brief time that has passed between now and then has brought some perspective to the tragedy.

ver since young adulthood I’ve always felt that women face a certain degree of danger in this society. This is partially because I had experienced violence and the threat of violence from male adults as early as age 11. I was once assaulted by a man in the park while sitting on a bench, with my younger cousin and neighbor. We must have annoyed him with our playfulness, so he arose from the bench he sat upon and jogged up the hill to reprimand me. After shouting and cursing very close to my face, he struck me directly upon my cheek while my cousin sat in shock.

aturday marked the moon sighting and beginning of Ramadan for Muslims in the Bay Area. Yet, for the family of Ali Abdullah, this evening signified something very sorrowful. Emad and Jihad Abdullah, parents of Ali, were notified that their eldest son had been shot on the corner of D Street and 98 th avenue in Oakland.
